Mixing chlorine-based bleach or cleaner with anything acidic (citric acid, vinegar, acidic cleaners) releases toxic chlorine gas. Avoid using them one after the other in the same place, too.
Why
The active ingredient of chlorine cleaners (sodium hypochlorite) reacts with acid to give off chlorine gas. Even after rinsing, leftover cleaners can react with each other, for example in the drain.Evidence
Primary National Consumer Affairs Center of Japan warning (2026-03-18): mixing is known to release harmful chlorine gas. In its test, a chlorine cleaner and citric acid were used together in a bathroom and the chlorine cleaner remained in the drain trap. After use, flush well with water and avoid using other cleaners right afterwards link

Notes and limits
The typical accident is using a chlorine mould remover and a citric-acid limescale remover in the bathroom on the same day. In the Consumer Affairs Center's test, chlorine cleaner remained in the drain trap even after rinsing. After using a chlorine cleaner, flush well with water and do not use another cleaner right afterwards. Check for the "do not mix" label. Ventilate while cleaning. If your eyes or throat hurt, leave the room at once, air it out, and seek medical advice if symptoms persist.
