This is a guide to writing facts for Mamechi. Mamechi is a very light collection of papers that gathers "the knowledge Wikipedia does not carry".

Posting rules (required)

  1. One entry = one piece of knowledge. Write "what happens" (1–2 sentences) and "why" (1–2 sentences), 3–4 sentences in all.
  2. Add at least one source. Posts without any source are not published.
  3. Write the "why" with sources. An article whose "why" cannot be backed by sources is capped at fact rank B. Use the notes for the limits and conditions of the "why".
  4. If something is true only under certain conditions (it works only in this case, and so on), write that in "Notes and limits". Without notes, facts easily turn into myths.

Posting with the form

The easiest way is the posting form. Fill in the title, what happens, why, notes, up to three sources, your name and the genre, then press "Post" and the article is created. You need to be logged in to post.

The operators add the ranks (fact rank, wow rank and usefulness) and the verification status later. A newly posted article is published as "Not verified" and "Unrated" and appears under "New posts (awaiting verification)" on the list of facts. Articles with an empty "Why" and articles ticked "This is my own experience" get fact rank C and "Replications wanted".

To have an AI tidy your text into the fields, see the posting assistant. Writing with the visual editor or the source editor ("How to write" below) still works as before.

How to write

Create a new page and use the template "豆知識" (fact). In the visual editor, choose Insert → Template and pick "豆知識" to get the input fields. See Template:豆知識 for what each field means and which values it takes.

Use a short sentence that tells what the knowledge is as the page name (for example, "Older eggs are easier to peel when hard-boiled").

Poster and replications wanted

Each article records its "poster". Articles written by the site are credited to "Mamechi editors".

If your only evidence is your own experience, set "replications wanted" to yes. The article then shows "Replications wanted" at the top and is listed under "Facts awaiting replication" on the list of facts. If you try it, please write your result on the article's talk page.

Source grades

  • Primary: research, public bodies, people directly involved (those who make or sell the thing, and so on)
  • Secondary: expert commentary
  • Tertiary: summary articles
  • Poster's experience: results the poster tried personally (a separate category from primary, secondary and tertiary)

A fact rank of B or above is not given on tertiary sources alone. Top search results sometimes include summary articles that cite sources which do not exist. Follow the citations and check the original material.

An article whose only evidence is the poster's experience gets fact rank C. Once replications by others come in, it can go up to B (A and S need a primary or secondary source).

The three ranks

  • Fact rank (how certain it is): S / A / B / C / unrated
  • Wow rank (how surprising it is): S / A / B / C / unrated
  • Usefulness (how useful it is): S / A / B / C / not applicable / unrated
    • S: you can use it today, and it makes a big difference
    • A: there is a clear situation where you would use it
    • B: nice to know; a small advantage
    • C: not practical. Given only to facts that promise a practical use but do not deliver
    • Not applicable: the fact is worth knowing for its own sake (usefulness does not apply). The rank box shows "—"

Add a one-line reason for each rank.

Derivations

While researching one fact you may find another. In that case, create a new page and put the original fact's page name in "derived from". Derived facts are listed automatically. The whole picture is on the derivation tree.

Translation

Mamechi manages each article in two languages, Japanese and English. Articles that can be translated show a list of languages at the top. Use "Translate this page" to enter a translation sentence by sentence.
